ECO CRAFT: MACRAMÉ WORKSHOP
A PHOTOSHOOT TO 'LIGHT UP OUR CHRISTMAS'
WHAT IS MACRAMÉ YOU ASK? IF YOU'RE A LOVER OF BOHO INTERIOR DESIGN OR CRAFTING THEN YOU MAY ALREADY HAVE A GOOD IDEA...
Macramé means knot in French and is just that - a sustainable eco-craft using knotting techniques!
As a junior graphic designer - naturally if I’m doing anything creative, nine times out of ten you will find me on my Mac. However, the importance of getting off the screen and into new creative skills outside of design is something I’ve wanted to put into practice more often - to help me both wind down and inspire my practice.
The opportunity for me to finally put this to this test occurred recently when a friend invited me to a workshop by Tassel and Twine - a lovely local maker who specialises in Macramé. The session was around four hours long and we learned a range of different knots (such as a 'spiral knot’ - my favourite!) surrounded by like-minded crafty people and after this four-hour session - we all left with our own Macramé wall hanging.
This workshop reminded me not only how fulfilling it is to learn new skills (although I have to admit I really did struggle at first- tying knots is hard work guys) but also the importance of being mindful and present.
Leaving feeling content and full of creative inspiration it made me realise that maybe in a world full of endless amazing digital content, sometimes putting the Mac(book) down and picking up a physical skill can be just what you need.
